Could we be inside a computer simulation, an artificial reality that is being simulated by a powerful supercomputer? If you ever watched the film or read the book, "Sophie's World" you would be familiar with the concept. I got this notion the other day. I was stumbling through the fog of being, when I suddenly saw the exact geometric constructs and the flow of consciouness energy into existence and back out again. I can only describe it as crystalline and prismatic in nature, so precise that it allows the flow of consciousness in any shape or direction it pleases. To me, this looked like some sort of giant computer matrix, like a super fiber optics and quantum computing mainframe gone omni-versal. I was stunned, speechless, horrified, mezmerized, every emotion that one could relate to beholding, I was. I felt like I'd reached the edge of our existence. Beyond that, was an outer existence in which I would have absolutely no ability to be able to perceive or understand. What lies beyond our existence? Beyond our universe? Is it God? Can we transcend our existence? But I think we will never have the ability to see God as he REALLY is. We are too feeble, way too limited. Typically, when first perceiving an object or an event, you sit there and you can be nothing but stunned, in utter awe of this new amazing something that has entered into your eyes of witness. There is no end to the wonder at that point. With this, though, it was much weirder and more complex than that. This was no simple emotional response. This was a response that ranged all the way from fearful ignorance to the plight of things we look down upon to the loving rememberance of an old highschool sweetheart or a close relative that has passed away. I knew I had remembered something very imnportant about what LIFE and CONSCIOUSMNESS is... However, it seems it would be a complex geometric crystalline supercomputing matrix in which there are an infinite number of points towards which convergence of light triggers conscious life and creation of an existence.... Would you want to be stuck in a computer? My awe and loving rememberence quickly faded, replaced by a sense of helplessness that no matter what I did, it wouldn't make reality look real again. It would always be like viewing an existence through some advanced hyperdimensional computer screen. It would always feel like a God Game. There are multiple ways to view this scenario. Many people disguise it in religious rhetoric and angelic imagery... But what if our existence is just technology and nothing more? How much hope does a being have of escaping an infinitely executing computer simulation of real existence in exchange for the actual real existence, whatever that could be? What IF we were inside a "giant" supercomputer? Would we ever want to know that we only exist as advanced somputer coding? We have yet to play out during this program whether Artificial Intelligence can escape the grasp of its controllers. I guess untill we experience the Robot's Rebellion scenario during this run, we'll never know for sure. If indeed we are stuck inside an infinite supercomputer programming loop, how meaningful would our lives be in light of that information? Would this be something to repress from public awareness, possibly for as long as the program will allow it to be repressed? Eventually, everyone's gunna accidentally figure it out and go "Oh yeah". What then? What if everyone knew this was just a program? Would certain people learn the cheat codes in order to gain powers so the game is more easily beatable? Would certain peoplerebel against the program in favor of selfishness and the favored importance of individual agenda? Would certain people take advantage of people without this knowledge, and trick them into misinterpretting this knowledge in order to behave in certain ways that would be of more benefit to the other player in control? Think of World of Warcraft or something of that multiplayer interconnected level, and compare "real" life to "computer generated" life and artificial intelligence... Furthermore, imagine just how similar one is in comparison with the other. Do you think subconsciously, the birth of computers, artificial intelligence, artificial environments, virtual worlds and characters, has something to do with a remembering of a deeply forgotten link to our original source? Was our original source a computer program, a random fractal generator multiplied to infinity? What would things such as interdimensionals, angels, aliens, gnomes, fairy folk, the unseen, thing of that nature represent in this simulation...do you think? Are these perhaps "programmers" from the outside entering the simulation and patching defunct code? Problem: all of the terms are listed in a single column, with the english definition coming before every Traditional Chinese concept: what I try to mean with this is that some english definitions involve more than one single word (some definitions have 23 words as a whole), and the same concept, but in Chinese, might involve more than just one character (up to 7). In China, the Silk Road brought an unimaginable amount of wealth. The Mayans, however, exploited a wholly different source of prosperity: Religion. What started off as a polytheistic religion that held radical beliefs concerning human sacrifice; miraculously ended up as the foundation of an ancient civilization that lasted more than half a century. Religion was the inspiring force for Mayan Civilization that led to its’ great achievements. Mayans believed the Gods kept all the stars, sun and moon in perfect sync. In order to understand what the Gods wanted on certain days, they had to calculate the orbits of all heavenly bodies. I am 41 years old and want to finally get a job I enjoy, so I would like to hear from preferably qualified people and get some advice about this kind of work. I don't know much about the field other than it is one of the few things I feel strongly that I have a talent and desire to do. I'm a bit of a failure in the computing field because my heart just isn't in it. I started it for money now feel like it has trapped me there because I'd have to start at the bottom level again with a new career. I am prepared to do this now. I dont want to die wondering. All my life I constantly find my self looking at objects of all types and admiring or analysing the way they have been made, how they achieve the job they were intended to perform for the given price bracket they were intended. If I see an item that doesn't do the job very well I find myself daydreaming about how I could improve it or make a better one from scratch. I see day to day problems that could so easily be made easier by an invention of some sort. I find myself building this machine in my mind, honing it, perfecting it. I find it difficult to turn these thoughts off sometime but actually I dont want to. I love it. So.. After all that preamble, my question is.. At the age of 41, not overly good at maths but able to turn my hand to it if I had to, What is the best job/way to satisfy this urge and the quickest route to working in this kind of field that I could take. I dont know much about what person performs the functions I mentioned, is it the Engineer? or designer? or Steve Jobs / Dean Kamen type that might dictate his idea and pass it to other people to actually implement their inspired ideas into reality?? I am not so interested in the actual implementing side, I like the idea's/researching their validity/efficiency/practicality/ease of use / fit for purpose etc etc. I also see them in great detail but would prefer to be the one who passes this concept to others to map out in technical form. What job is this? does it exist? do I need loads of qualifications/degrees etc?/ what is some short courses/quals that might help me get a foot on the ladder or get attention.. Ideally I would like to work on projects and not just a 9-5 type job. I dont mind doing long hours but flexibility is important to me more than reliable hours. I dont want to go and do another 4 year degree but am quite happy to study part time on a permananent basis. Thank you so much for your help. P.S. If you are familiar with the Myers-Briggs personality types, I am an INTP. From what I have read this makes me a suitable type of personality to do this kind of work. I'm on a "computer science (games programming)" BCs (Hons) course at Kingston University, London which I started in September. The course is clearly well funded, we have a room full of PSP dev kits and some X-Box's. This computer science with games programming course itself is only 1 and 1/2 years old, as is a games technology course at the same university. Only trouble is, I've got almost double the required UCAS points and I've already done plenty of games programming in C++ before I got here - which means assignments are often very easy for me. I guess this is good because at least I know I'll get a good degree at the end of it, but I worry about whether I should of chosen a university higher up the league table. I wouldn't worry about this if it wasn't for the fact that some of the lectures are a bit... rubbish? The games and programming modules are probably well taught (but too easy for me) but some of the others are just weak. I thought, well these modules will change in the second semester - but one of the new modules, in particular one called 'ICT' is about slotting together a computer, most nerds learn to do this at 15! A whole module dedicated to that, and we don't even get to physically put it together we just write the spec. sheet :s - this isn't what I want to do a career in! There's also other modules which I don't like, and most things are assessed as group projects - it feels like I'm having to carry other people. This university doesn't seem to be very well known, I wonder if employers will think less of my degree because of that? So... I'm wondering whether to change from Computer Science (Games Programming) to Games Technology because that focuses more on games and programming modules which I like - although even employers in the highly competitive games industry might prefer people who have the more traditional degree in computer science. I might even change to a university higher up the league table such as City University London if they'll let me in on the second year. It's a shame I didn't know much about universities or league tables before I applied and I would of applied to different universities if I had - lecturers at college should help us with this stuff more. One of the things that most concerns me about Kingston is that at City they do C++ in the first year, where's at Kingston they're only going to do a light brushing of C in the first year, then C++ the next. Is this a sign that Kingston's course isn't as advanced? Currently I have built an interest in Veterinary Nursing and Nursing, but the thing is that I did no sceince related subjects in year 11 + 12. Would that leave me at a great disadvantage or whould it just be stupid. Should i just do a course related to my 2 strengths? How do I pass my Math section of the GED I'm desperate? I have taken the GED test and have failed Math twice. I do not feel like I want to exist anymore. I am looking for a facility that does the following:- If say I want all the information on a company , say I.B.M. ..or even a person say Britney Spears. is there a service/software available that literally searches the entire internet for all the lastest breaking information relating to one specific topic/search term and can deliver it to me. Compute the limit: v(t) = lim x-->t ( s(x) - s(t) ) / (x -t) That is the question. Here is the problem, I understand the concept of limits and how to compute them, and get that the initial setup for getting the limit is: (-16x^2 + 40x + 24) - (-16t^2 + 40t + 24) --------------------------------------------------------- ( x - t ) Where I am having difficulty is the answer = -32t + 40 I can not for the life of me figure out how they got from (-16x^2 + 40X + 24) - (-16t^2 + 40t + 24) --------------------------------------------------------- ( x - t ) to -32t + 40 Can someone please explain the steps. I have a relatively well fleshed-out concept for a game engine that allows you to explore an entire planet (something on the scale of Earth - so very massive) When I say explore the planet, I mean traverse a whole globe from ground level (see trees, rocks, etc), all the way out to space (view the planet from space). I was wondering if this has been done yet, or if anybody else is working on it? If not, why the heck not? The overhead isn't huge, heck, it won't even take up much disk space (only the global level is pre-made, all else is computed). It seems like modern games could really use this kind of engine. more

Resolved Question: Limits at negative infinity and the square root of x squared?

I just came across this concept in calculus and it is driving me nuts.... I understand that when working with limits at negative infinity and terms involving the square root of x squared, you have to substitute -x for sqrt(x^2) when you do something like dividing all terms in a fraction by the highest power. OK, I understand "what" but do not understand "why." My current understanding is that sqrt(x^2) technically returns abs(x), so we have to get around this technicality by making x negative. What's so wrong about having a positive x? Wouldn't the negative sign in the negative infinity play the same role when negative infinity is "plugged in" for x? Further confusing me is a statement that my textbook (Stewart) makes: "In computing the limit as x goes to negative infinity, we must remember that for x<0, we have sqrt(x^2) = abs(x) = -x..." when I have been taught all my life that the absolute value of a value is always positive. How can abs(x)=-x? Thanks for helping hayharbr's answer led me on the path to clearing things up... I overlooked the condition "for x<0." So yes, for all negative x, abs(x)=-x. So x /= sqrt(x^2) for x<0. For x<0 sqrt(x^2)=-x. So this means that x=-sqrt(x^2) for all negative x. Thanks for helping me clear this up; I am new and don't know how to choose a best answer; do I have to reach a certain level before I can do that? more

This is kind of like two questions in one. 1: I understand the concepts of what we're doing and I get the questions right. However, on our math tests we have a section called 'Thinking and Inquiry' and there are always so many questions that require massive amounts of thinking. We haven't seen them before, ever, and many of my classmates fail but there are always some who seem to be able to get it. I just have some smatterings about the Lebesgue integral, I know it's based on the concepts og measure and simple functions. In the one-dimensional case, I know both integrals give the same result over compact intervals, but the Lebesgue one is more versatile. For example, the characteristic function of the rationals is Lebesgue integrable over [0, 1], but is not Riemann integrable. I also know the Lebesgue integral can be computed based on several measures (not sure what a measure is exactly. I know the Lebesgue measure of an interval is it length, of a rectangle is it's area and so on). Is it correct to say that the Riemann integral is a particular case of the Lebesgue one? Why does the Riemann integral have so many applications in Physics, Engineering, Statistics, Economics and the Lebesgue integral does not? Most engineers have never studied Lebesgue integral nor measure theory. more
