Resolved Question: I need advice, there is MOLD in my apt!?

I have lived in these apartments for 6 months now. The only reason why I am living in these apartments is because they accepted me with a previous eviction on my record. Other apartments decline me. So, I have mold growing in my apartment around my back sliding glass door. It is covering the walls in the corners of the ceiling. There is sooo much moisture in my apartment that the windows always have water on them everyday. AND the moisture from the windows must have washed the MOLD off of the wall and onto the carpet because now there are black stains on my carpet next to the back door. The other day i wiped my walls down with a cloth that i had bleach on, most of it went away but I am scared of it coming back. Plus, there are some spots that the mold is still growing that I cant reach. My lease expires at the end of this month, but I cant move out because of a couple reasons. My previous eviction 2 years ago, plus i dont have enough money for new move in costs. So what should I do? Should I just clean my apartment or request to move into a new apartment and maybe change getting mold in the new apt as well? There are reviews for these apartments online that say for years and years now mold has been a problem here so its not just me. How can I get rid of this mold and stop it from coming back? And without paying a fortune for heating bills to maybe help stop the mold from forming. Any advice would be great, thanks.  more

Resolved Question: Deocrating thoughts on my light choices please?

Here are some light options. I don't want modern these are the color tones I want. They go with the rest of the house and we don't have the money to change out everything. But I need lights for the kitchen. We have 4 windows at 7 feet tall and 5.5 feet wide so we get plenty of natural light. The kitchen is big...very big....the dinning room is part of the kitchen and we have a bar around the kitchen and a sitting area that will have flush lights on the ceiling. Cost is an issue here as well so yes there are other lights I like better but due to the cost they are not an option. So here are a few I like. Please tell me your thoughts on them. Thank you very much! I also need to stay with the ambers because of a small window that goes across the top of the wall at the bathroom off of the kitchen is in amber and a dark reddish tone. http://www.overstock.com/Home-Garden/Asbury-Inverted-Pendant/3486092/product.html http://www.overstock.com/Home-Garden/Tiffany-style-Stained-Glass-Fishscale-Mini-Pendant/3893446/product.html http://www.overstock.com/Home-Garden/Kendall-Inverted-Pendant/3486079/product.html I have to buy three pendants and then a chandlier. Thank you for your help! http://www.overstock.com/Home-Garden/Antique-Bronze-4-light-Chandelier/3915287/product.html Yes the pendants will go over the bar, 3 of them. Then the chandlier on the other side of the room where the dining room table will be. I'm sorry for the confusion. I'm not looking to use all of them. I'm trying to choose one style. sorry about that! lol Which ever one i use we will use the chandlier and the matching pendants. We have tons of natural light in our kitchen and don't need to worry about the color so much. Thank you!  more

Resolved Question: Stressed out about my wedding advice please!?

I am really stressed out about everything, who to invite, what venue to have it at, etc. I called a few churches that I wanted to have it at (and was going to join their church) and they were so rude and unkind that I really don't even want to have it in a church and then we were thinking about having it on the beach because his grandpa lives by the Chesapeake Bay and then I was worried about the breeze from the bay blowing sand and the cost of renting out tents, tables, etc. I feel like I am compromising on the wedding I wanted because I cannot afford it, a Maymont wedding is too expensive, so is the Carillon at Dogwood Dell and the prettier churches want to charge too much (the ones that will marry you without being a member are about $400-$500). I would prefer an outside wedding, can anyone give me some ideas? I live in the west end of Richmond, but would willing to travel to a nice, but affordable venue (under $300). The church we have decided on is marrying us only because his parents are members, but it really wasn't what I envisioned, I wanted pews and stained glass windows, this church is modern and has chairs so I can't really decorate it. As for the invitations my Mom was getting everyone's address to send out invitations for my bridal shower but then my aunt said to put her daughter and daughter in law's names on her invite because she thinks that they should be invited. They did invite me to their weddings but I didn't go because we never even talk to them anymore so I feel like I am doing it to pacify her and I only wanted to invite people that I actually am still in contact with and I wanted it to be small (80 people or less) and his brother is upset because he was not asked to be the best man...In my wedding I am getting my Mom to give me away, I am having a junior bridesmaid and a ring bearer and that is all. He asked his best friend because it is his best friend and his brother has a way of showing up to family functions in a bad mood because of something that happened earlier in the day to him and being in a bad mood for the rest of the day. Ugh I am so stressed out about it and we are going to talk to him about his attitude and if he is in a bad mood then to stay home and I hate it that people feel that they have to go out and buy new clothes for this occasion (and my fiance's parents would have to buy clothes for themselves and his brother and SIL), I told them to just wear what they have. My cousins I haven't seen in over 10 years and they have children I have never met, you never hear from them unless they want money and they never come to any of our family functions. Also, if anyone knows of an inexpensive rental for a tent, chairs and tables in the Chesapeake Bay area let me know! Thanks for the kind answers everyone and yes I am really stressed out, not just over the wedding. There is a lot more going on with me than I will include in this and it is a bit overwhelming to me. I agree, I was thinking about a wedding consultant but did not do it because of the cost, I was trying to have a nice, but not overly expensive wedding and we are going to the Bay to see if that venue will work for us this weekend weather permitting. I agree, I think that I should just invite those that I would really even send a regular card to, and that would not include my cousins or a lot of my aunts and yes people are trying to make my wedding into theirs and I hate it. As for the wedding/bridal magazines I will check them out and I like the idea of the binder to keep everything in order. Personally I didn't want to invite his brother at all since he is known to have a bad attitude but I feel like I "should" since his children are part of the wedding and he is "family":/  more

Resolved Question: Can my landlord force me to pay for damages that were present when we moved in?

I live in California Bay Area and I just found out that my landlord is keeping $500 of my $2000 deposit. She says that $225 is to replace a screen door that was a mess when I moved in. It was a basic aluminum frame...bent and had holes in it. She installed a much nicer steel and glass screen door and is charging me for the cost. Seems unfair to me even if I was the one that messed up the screen...which I was not. She says the other $275 is to paint the baseboards in the living room. Problem with that is I did not do the damage. Carpet in the living room reeked of urine...we didn't notice much before the summer months but on hot days the smell was unbearable...eye watering in fact. There was nice hardwood floor underneath so I asked her if I could tear out the carpet. She said yes since it was old and smelly. I did so (the pad smelled like human urine...really gross) and spent my own time and money refurbishing the hardwood but I did not paint the inch or so thick strip of baseboard that was below the old carpet level. I thought I had spent enough of my own time/money to improve her property and the strip wasn't that bad. We're talking about 25 linear feet of an inch high strip...and they used touch up paint that I bought with my own money but it still somehow cost $275. Can she do this? I have pics documenting the terrible stains under the carpet but only witnesses for the screen. Do I have a small claims case? She's a trial lawyer and tries to use that to intimidate tenants so everyone is afraid of her. None of the windows in the 4 upstairs bedrooms opened and it would get stifling hot on warm days...to the point you couldn't sleep in there. She left a 3 foot hole in our ceiling for over 3 months while in the (slow) process of fixing a clogged shower. The ceiling in the laundry room was falling down and rain poured through it like a sieve. I later found out from a neighbor that my utilities were running the common laundry room and possible a studio apartment in the basement. So, if I don't have a case with the deposit, is it possible to recoup some of my rent/utility money given the above? One more thing...should I send her a letter saying I want my money back and why or should I just hit her with a small claims notice without the letter?  more

Influences Brought on by the Catholic Church During the middle ages, around the years of 500 till 1500, Europe was consumed by both warfare and intolerance. Attempts to provide order had been established, giving way for the feudal system. For a while, this form of government had worked to some degree. Lords would dispense land to peasants in return for loyalty. Though, the system had one great flaw. False loyalty was regularly undergone due to greed, making betrayals common. In efforts to control this disorderly society, Catholicism was made to be the most prevalent part of European life. With the increasing beliefs in this faith, a new philosophy about how people should live emerged, giving rise to the Catholic Church. Everyday life was completely controlled by this new theocratic management. Ideas were monitored, making nothing out of reach from the church. In many cases the pope, who was leader of the church, had more power than kings. The church influenced nearly all aspects of European society, through its concepts of unity, military conflicts, and economics. The church brought a remarkable sense of unity to Europe, because everyone understood their roles in society. Since religion was so widely promoted, the governments enforced it to all of its citizens. From early childhood, people were taught that the only way they could get into Heaven was if the Roman Catholic Church let them. Preachers would explain the horrors of Hell which would await anybody who did not listen to the Church. A system of justice was developed, called Canon law which would guide peoples conduct. With shared beliefs being endorsed throughout, one could bond to another without much complication regardless of social status. The church administered sacraments which were religious ceremonies. These rituals brought people closer together and allowed their faiths to grow. Village churches were known to be the religious and social centers of town. Holidays were spent there, in addition to the regular worship services held. This surprisingly, brought internal security amongst the people because they could now be part of a strong religious community at the expense of their liberty. For nearly 500 years Western Europe was within a “dark age”. Constant attack lurked everywhere which was brought on by the Vikings and Magyar. Monasteries and many centers of learning were destroyed. People feared to promote learning, as it would more than likely be put to an end. Thus, many became uneducated and therefore, intolerant. It took quite a bit of time for the church to revive itself. In 910, church reformers wanted to return to the ethics of Christianity. They managed to restore the Church to power, leading them into what historians call “The Age of Faith”. Pope Urban II declared a campaign to claim the Holy Land, Jerusalem, which had been controlled by the Muslims. Incredible religious inspiration was brought on with this call for a crusade. Those who died for the cause were promised to get into heaven. Many of these campaigns were unsuccessful and led to many deaths. People began to lose expectations in the Pope due to the constant disappointment. In Spain, Isabella and Ferdinand upheld an inquisition, which was a massive movement to convert all Jews and Muslims to Christianity. Many converted, though the ones that refused or lied were killed. In 1942, all observant Jews and Muslims were expelled from Spain. In Western Europe during 1100, society flourished. A new form of cathedral architecture was adopted replacing the previous Romanesque style. Gothic themed buildings became widely popular due to its beautiful design. Gothic cathedrals plunge upward as if reaching toward Heaven. Light is able to gloriously enter through enormous stained glass windows. Sculptures and wooden-carvings were also commonly added. These decorations were meant to inspire all of the worshipers with the brilliance of G-d. Towns envied other town with these superb houses of worship. Inevitably, they began to create their own. It cost a fortune and took decades to build. This would allow many jobs to be produced within the town. Supplies would be gathered and organized, which would then be used for building. Soon, merchants would flock to sites of the cathedrals to sell goods to on-lookers. Entire communities could form around the creation of a cathedral. The church would obtain its wealth by taxing all of it populace, in what they called tithes. 10% of annual income would have to be given to the Church, in the form of either money or goods. A failure to pay the tax, so they were told by the church, would lead them to eternal suffering in Hell. Additionally, baptisms, marriages, and burials were to be paid for. Resolved Question: If churches are non-profit and all giving..then why?

Why and how are many churches very large and elaborate buildings, some including expensive stained glass windows and solid gold fixtures. May churches are on many acres of land. This money has to come from somewhere. Getting tax breaks surely saves money. Donations also is the main income for these churches. But why are these donations used to build these elaborate churches rather than to help people in need? Surely all you need is 4 walls and a roof to stand under as you hold your religious ceramonies and prayers. What does a church costing millions has to do with religion? Non-profit ? Who are we kidding? Profit goes into the church and some goes into the pockets of those who run it with a small percentage going to the needy.  more

Resolved Question: Is there a reason for the architectural differences between Catholic churches and Protestant churches?

The Catholic churches I'm referring to have very high ceilings, stained glass windows, lots of artwork depicting Christ and the saints, different colored tiles on the floor that add visual texture, and other various artistic detail in the sanctuary. The Protestant (for example: Baptist, Methodist, Nazarene, Pentecostal, Church of Christ) churches I have visited are very simple in comparison- much lower ceilings, no stained-glass windows, no artwork of Christ inside the sanctuary, one color of carpet in the sanctuary, and very little if any artistic detail inside. My question isn't regarding what is better, but is there a historical reason for this difference? Does it relate to the Protestant Reformation? Did Protestant church leaders, years ago, condemn certain architectural elements as being profane, unnecessary, or distracting for worship? Or is it because the Catholic churches have been around longer, time-wise, so they have those elements that were influential at that time in history, while the Protestant churches were built later and made to be more cost-efficient? Thanks for your opinions and information.  more

Resolved Question: Help with english paper?

the assignment is to write a paper about your father by describing things in his office or car, just help me with proofreading which i am very bad at. anything will help, and the person with most/best tip will get best answer Walking into Raymond’s office, you first step on his rug, which is aligned perfectly with the hardwood flooring. The rug was made in the 18th century, and has been passed down from his mother’s family. Along the edge of the rug is one patch of the blue and white cloth stained red. This means that the rug was an original work by the creator. The rug is one of the many of the priceless heirlooms stationed in my dad’s office. Strewn across the burgundy walls are his clocks. Each of these timepieces is a wind-up model, each from around 1950. The clocks are made of wood framing and metal hands. Past the rug lies Raymond’s desk. One of the newest items in his office, his desk is modern and constructed of metal and stained glass. Papers are strewn across it, a disorganized state displayed throughout the office. These papers differ anywhere from receipts to case reports for Exxon®. These papers differ anywhere from useless to priceless. The chair seated at his desk is the center point of the office. The Aeron chair is a modern icon, renowned for it’s superior comfort. The chair is where Raymond spends most of his time. Across from his modern desk is another desk, the ladder being much older, where his computer sits. The desk is another antique, however it is shadowed among the other thing around the office; like one person hiding among a crowd. Despite the reclusive spot that the desk is placed, it’s actually quite interesting. The desk is a copy of the Presidential Resolute desk, only without secret compartments. On top of the leather surface of the cloned desk sits Raymond’s computer. Unlike the models in other offices, the computer is very advanced. Costing upward up $5000, it has two monitors, each mounded on the wall, and a keyboard each with it’s own little led screen. One wouldn’t be surprised to see the computer cook dinner for him too. Along walls that aren’t the windows overlooking downtown, sit small posters or plaques, each representing an accomplishment for Boy Scouts®. These plaques however aren’t solely mounted on the wall; the sit along both desks and in one of the 3 bookcases in the office.  more

Resolved Question: I need to have wotk undertaken on the external walls to my house. I need access to my neighbour's property.

I'm getting cavity wall insulation on my house. The company need to erect scaffolding and will have to erect it on my neighbour's property to insulate a wall. They are refusing to allow scaffolding to be erected on their property and as such I can't get the insulation done. I've tried reasoning with them but they will not budge. What do I do now? I've heard about going to court for a court order under the Access to neighbouring Land Act 1992. What would be the cost of doing this and what would my chances of success be if the neighbours contest it. They have a stained glass window and are afraid of it getting damaged. I've contacted the scaffolding company to make them aware of this but the neighbours still refuse to budge. The insulation company have said that they can insulate 3 of my walls but would have to come back and do the disputed wall later. They have also said that unless all four walls are done my home will not be properly insulated. Any advice, anyone. Thanx  more

Resolved Question: Insurance won't replace windows...is this right?

I just comletely remodeled an older home (including refinishing the windows and original trim) and it has the old windows with divided glass. Unfortunately we had hail a week ago and it broke out 7 windows. The insurance company says they will only cover the cost to replace the glass squares because they are fixable. On most of the windows multiple squares are broken.. 5, 6, 7. Is this right? Can they do this? The rain and wet also stained and raised the grain on the inside of the windows, but they say this is fixable too. Why do I even bother having insurance? I'm not talking about an upgrade mbrkatz.. insurance agent 21 years... I'm talking about fixing the windows I had completely stripped, stained and sealed less then 2 months ago that were wer for 8 hours while I was gone at work and ran down the inside of the window, down the wall and soaked into the sheetrock. And don't you think they could send an agent out to look at the damage rather then ask me to take pictures and e-mail them only to give their determination?  more

Resolved Question: Alternative to range hood?

Does a kitchen vent absolutely have to be in a range hood, or can it be a ceiling-mounted fan over the range? Do they make such things? (Small kitchens are fun!) Putting in a range hood would mean rebuilding the back wall and would without exception cost in the neighbourhood of $10,000, according to three estimates I've received. Yeah, can't have a built-in stove either unless I again spend $10,000. Guess I'll have to go without. More: I guess I should point out that I wasn't looking to use a bathroom ceiling fan: I was wondering if there were any fans made that weren't included in a range hood. And unfortunately I already have a nice stove I don't intend to replace after five days.  more

Resolved Question: Is what happened at the church all my fault?

I have recently constructed a device for propelling fruit and vegetables up to 900ft, at a velocity of 150ft per second. I used old vehicle parts mainly. Anyway, I was using the machine on the upper field of my manor, launching various fruits and vegetables into the village. This morning, I received an angry phone call from a vicar, who was furious that I had thrown a marrow through the stained glass window and interupted a funeral. I am to pay £2500 in costs. Is it fair that this is demanded of me, bearing in mind that I was merely have a bit of jolly fun?  more

Resolved Question: A dark poem anyone?

The vision of you, you are standing at a distance from me, standing in total darkness, but truely I can see, meeting me in your starkness..Raw unfettered emotion crawls up my throat, the bleek lenses of corrosion fall away as you smote. You approach, not repulsed not reproached, but in total trust respect and amore. My dark destiny from days gone by, days I still long for. In all black chantilly lace, and a high ruffled collar, a chandelier necklace, a silken fan before your face. The moon rises full, high in the night sky, stones of granite surround us, your eyes, oh your beautiful eyes slitted you are being sly. Is there something on your mind my dear? I ask as you slip away beyond a crypt, through the gated door you sneak...If the dead were to whisper at this very moment in time I would hear it, but I would embrace it, as a gentle breeze for I would fail to fear it. I follow you, into the crypt in which you have chosen, there upon a granite bench my love lies motionless, frozen...The moonlight seeps in through the stained glass windows above you, I have lost you my dear, so many years ago, but I realize that I still love you. I lean forward and place a small kiss upon your stony cheek, upon that granite which is made to resemble you, I know that it is not truely you, but a representation of the one I love, the one I lost, The one I would fight for at any cost. Through a broken pannel of stained glass the wind whistles a tiny tune, as I think of many a good time we had together...By the light of the moon.  more

Resolved Question: How or where do I get stained glass windows repaired and reframed?

Kinda goes along with my last question. The house also has 2 gorgeous stained glass windows. They are in excellent condition except for the framing around them. Would like to have them cleaned and reframed, but have had no luck with the phone book trying to find a place to do it. Also, any one have any idea how much it will cost?  more

Resolved Question: Window Staining.?

One of our house windows is too big and we are always cautious that someone is watching from outside. While we want to keep the curtains and blinds opened during the day, but still we want no one to watch inside. Is there a way we can stain it or do soemthing that the visitiblity is reduced? Something like a film or coating on the glass which limits the light and so the visibility is a little bit reduced? If yes, then where do I buy it and how much is the effort and cost for this? Any other options are equally welcome Thanks, for all your help.  more

Resolved Question: In the Bible Jesus trashed a temple cos they were making money from worshippers but...?

Isn't that what today's churches do? They're obviously minted cos they're huge buildings with loads of gold and silver crosses and stuff, and the stained glass windows cost a fortune. Yet they constantly pass round collection plates for money from the congregation. If Jesus/God was a simple man, then surely He'd be happy with a wooden hut and no fancy stuff. What do you think?  more
